Ouessant Island in Finistère Brittany

Feared by the navigators in the past, nowadays overwhelmed by the private residences of the Parisians, the Ouessant Island is the remotest French territory in the Atlantic Ocean. With 2 beacons on the shore and other 3 at large, the inhabitants have tried to reduce the number of shipwrecks on the western coast of the island. However, the streams generated at the meeting of the Atlantic th the Channel as well as the isolated position of the island, situated at over one hour distance from the continent, still manage to keep away the less experienced navigators, fishing being also little developed. The unique Museum of Beacons and Seamarks, established in a lighthouse, Creac’h, describes the technical evolution of these lifesaving lights or the maritime navigation and takes us on a tour through images and stories, of the most famous beacons in Brittany.

BRIGNOGAN

Port at The Channel, Brignogan and its coastline are known as “the shipwreck coast”. From sailing boats to military vessels, present and past in navigation have encountered and still encounter the same hindrance: a fragmented coastline, with rocks that become visible when it’s too late.

The title reveals a sinuous coast, with fine, white sand beaches that enthrall the navigators and attract them towards the rocks. From the grayish white sandstone shore, having a blue and greenish sea as background, the tourists see the boats hidden between rocks and the narrow beaches. The boarding houses overlooking the sea watch the travelers while the Pontusval lighthouse, over the seamen.
